7 Important facts about Kidney Disease

January 18, 2023 by Dr. Ravi Bhadania

Kidney diseases are more common than the thought of

It is a well-established fallacy of the fact that kidney-related diseases are very rare. To bust this myth we must say that one will be verily surprised by knowing the statistics every year of kidney disease worldwide. The reason this disease is so common is a diversity of risk factors that can potentially cause kidney disease. Some examples of these risk factors are; hypertension, diabetes, age, race, etc. You may find these risk factors familiar because they are so common that one out of ten people comes under at least one category.

Most period of kidney disease development is without symptom

One of the reasons that kidney disease is known to be dangerous is due to its nature of being silent.  In most periods of kidney disease progression, the patient doesn’t have any apparent symptoms to hint towards his/ her condition. The signs of this condition usually tend to appear at the latter advanced stage of it when the patient becomes helpless for their recovery. In most cases of the diagnosis of kidney disease, people get to know about their condition while getting tested for some other disease.

The process and cost of kidney diagnosis are affordable

To stay on the safer side, it is advised that doctors get regularly tested for a kidney in order to be diagnosed at the early stage of the condition if you are suffering from it. This is because kidney disease at an early stage can be efficiently treated or managed. The process and cost of all the tests for this disease are not expensive. In fact, there are only two tests to get fully aware of the condition of your kidney. These tests are; urine tests and Blood tests which calculate the glomerular filtration rate of the kidneys.

Some things you can do if you have any risk factors for kidney

If you have any risk of developing kidney disease, it does not mean you have to develop it. There are a lot of things you can do to prevent yourself from this disease. General health protocols, such as watching your diet, exercising, and not smoking or drinking, are necessary to be followed. Other than these you must attentively avoid OTC medications especially painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. Maintaining blood pressure and sugar levels is also important.

What causes kidney disease

As already said hypertension and raised blood sugar levels are two of the major contributors to kidney disease. These conditions cause inflammation in the glomerulus of the cell’s kidneys which is the filtration unit of these cells. Structurally, the glomerulus is a bundle of blood vessels held together as sheets. When this structure gets damaged, the main function of filtration by kidneys is degraded. This sort of damage in the kidneys can be caused by various other things too, such as:

  • Infection
  • Nephritic syndrome
  • Cysts on the kidney
  • Heart-related issues

What are the treatment options for kidney disease

The nature of kidney disease is such that it develops over time. This means with time kidney disease gets more degrading and causes more complications.  This is the reason for the dynamic nature of the treatment of this disease. There is not one fixed treatment for this condition. In the early phases of kidney disease, patients are advised to stay fixed on the preventive measures of kidney disease like, eating healthy and avoiding risk factors. The more early the kidney disease is diagnosed, the more efficient the treatment. Once the kidney disease has reached the end stage, there is no option other than transplant or dialysis until the transplant.

A kidney transplant is better than staying on dialysis

At the end stage of kidney disease, dialysis is necessary until a potential donor is found for a kidney transplant. During the period for which the patient is on dialysis, their immune system gets weak to bear strong infections. It is important to get your dialysis done at a good and clean medical center to avoid infection. In end-stage kidney disease, kidney replacement surgery is the last option for the patient. It is said that dialysis is only a bridge between end-stage renal disease and kidney transplant. With a healthy kidney, the life expectancy quality of the patient is improved in comparison to when the patient is on dialysis.

Conclusion

There are many myths about kidney disease which need to be debunked by well-aware people. Kidney disease is becoming more common over time as reported by medical researchers and doctors. Everyone needs to pay attention to their renal health and get tested on regular basis. It is important for the diagnosed patient to be in touch with experienced practitioners and get their dialysis done in a clean and hygienic medical clinic.
